United Floor Coatings recently completed a two-car garage floor coating project in Stanley, NC featuring a full broadcast of 1/4" Outback flake. This garage had several issues that needed to be addressed before the new coating system could be installed, including a failing DIY epoxy coating, major cracking, and unfinished stem walls that the homeowner wanted coated for a cleaner finished look.

Like many garage floors we see throughout the Charlotte metro area, this one had previously been coated with a DIY epoxy kit. While those systems can look decent for a short period of time, they usually do not include the same level of surface preparation, concrete repair, moisture protection, or professional-grade topcoat used in a properly installed garage floor coating system. Over time, the coating can start to peel, wear unevenly, or expose the concrete underneath.

For this Stanley garage floor, our crew removed the existing DIY epoxy system, repaired the major cracks, coated the stem walls, and installed our moisture vapor barrier epoxy basecoat with a polyaspartic topcoat.

Removing the Existing DIY Epoxy System

The first step was removing the old DIY epoxy coating. This is one of the most important parts of the process because a new garage floor coating is only as strong as what it is bonded to. Installing over a weak or failing coating can lead to future peeling, delamination, or uneven performance.

Our crew mechanically removed the existing coating and prepared the concrete surface so the new epoxy basecoat could properly bond to the slab. Proper concrete grinding also helps open the surface profile of the concrete, creating the right foundation for a long-lasting floor coating system.

This is one of the biggest differences between a professional garage floor coating and a DIY epoxy kit. The coating itself matters, but the surface preparation matters just as much.

Repairing Major Cracking Before Installation

This garage also had major cracking issues that needed to be fixed before the coating system was installed. Cracks in a garage floor can create an uneven appearance, collect dirt, and telegraph through the finished coating if they are not handled correctly.

Before applying the coating system, we repaired the significant cracking to improve the final appearance and create a smoother, more consistent surface. While no coating can guarantee that concrete will never move again, addressing cracks during the preparation phase helps create a much cleaner and more durable finished floor.

For homeowners searching for garage floor coatings in Stanley, NC, this is an important detail to understand. A quality installation is not just about applying epoxy and flake. It is about correcting the underlying slab issues first.

MVB Epoxy Basecoat for Added Moisture Protection

Once the surface was properly prepared and repaired, we installed our MVB epoxy basecoat. MVB stands for moisture vapor barrier, and this basecoat is designed to help protect the coating system from moisture vapor transmission coming up through the concrete slab.

This is especially important in North Carolina garages, where clay-heavy soils and changing moisture conditions can contribute to vapor movement beneath the slab. A standard thin DIY coating typically does not provide this same level of moisture protection.

The MVB epoxy basecoat also provides a strong foundation for the decorative flake broadcast. For this project, the homeowner selected 1/4" Outback flake, which gives the garage a clean, warm, and durable finish with a more natural decorative look than plain gray concrete.

1/4" Outback Flake Broadcast

After the epoxy basecoat was applied, we broadcast 1/4" Outback flake into the wet coating. A full flake broadcast helps create texture, hide imperfections in the concrete, and give the floor a finished appearance that is much more attractive than bare concrete or solid-color epoxy.

Outback is a great choice for homeowners who want a decorative garage floor without making the space feel too dark. The blend works well with a variety of garage interiors, storage systems, wall colors, and vehicle colors.

The result is a garage floor that looks cleaner, more finished, and much easier to maintain.

Flaked Stem Walls for a Finished Garage Look

In addition to coating the main garage floor, we also flaked the stem walls. Stem walls are the vertical concrete edges around the perimeter of many garages. When left unfinished, they can make an otherwise beautiful garage floor look incomplete.

By coating and flaking the stem walls, the garage has a more seamless and professional appearance. This detail is especially noticeable in two-car garages where the vertical concrete edges are visible around the perimeter of the space.

Flaked stem walls are a popular upgrade for homeowners who want the entire garage to look finished, not just the flat floor area.

Polyaspartic Topcoat for Long-Term Durability

The final step was applying a polyaspartic topcoat over the flake system. Polyaspartic topcoats are commonly used on garage floor coatings because they provide excellent durability, chemical resistance, abrasion resistance, and UV stability.

This topcoat helps protect the decorative flake system from normal garage use, including hot tires, foot traffic, stored equipment, road salt residue, oil drips, and general wear. It also makes the surface easier to clean compared to bare concrete.

With the old DIY epoxy system removed, cracks repaired, stem walls coated, MVB epoxy installed, and polyaspartic topcoat applied, this Stanley garage now has a professional-grade coating system built for everyday use.

Garage Floor Coatings in Stanley, NC

This project is a great example of why professional preparation and product selection matter. The homeowner did not just need a new coating placed over the old floor. They needed the failed DIY system removed, the concrete repaired, and a complete garage floor coating system installed from the slab up.

For homeowners in Stanley, NC and the surrounding Charlotte metro area, United Floor Coatings installs epoxy garage floors, polyaspartic garage floor coatings, decorative flake systems, and moisture-resistant garage flooring systems designed for long-term performance.

If your garage floor has peeling epoxy, major cracks, stained concrete, or an old DIY coating that is starting to fail, our team can help restore the floor and install a durable, professional-grade system.
